English Studies
Director: Dr Rhiannon Purdie (rp6@st-andrews.ac.uk)
Other Teachers: all staff in the School of English
Entrance Requirements: a good degree with Honours from a UK university or its equivalent
Programme Duration: one year
Aim of programme: to allow students maximum flexibility in designing their own MLitt programme from the full range of academic 5000-level modules offered by the School and beyond. (Note however that Creative Writing modules are not normally open to students on this or any academic MLitt). This programme is for those who do not wish to restrict themselves to a single area of English Studies, or for those who wish to develop expertise in two or more discrete areas of the discipline in preparation for further research.
Programme: 120 taught credits made up of EN5100 Literary Research: Skills and Resources and 100 further credits at 5000-level. At least 60 credits must be taken from the menu of core modules. The remaining credits will be spent on Special Topics, additional core modules, or modules outwith the School of English (to a maximum of 20 credits). For further information on all three types of module, see the MLitt Options page. In this programme, no more than 40 credits may be taken from the syllabus of any one named (i.e. specialist) MLitt. The MLitt concludes with students writing a dissertation of 15,000 words on an agreed topic. Students can expect to meet with the Director of the programme at least twice a semester to discuss their options and progress.
Special application requirements: in addition to the Documents, we would request that prospective students complete and return an English Studies Module Selection Form 13-14 (Word, 139 KB). For potential School of English options, please view MLitt programme handbooks for current module information; for possible options within another University of St Andrews school or department, please check individual school web pages for information and contact details.
