PhD Scholarships for School of English Students
The School of English is able to award up to FIVE research scholarships for September 2012 doctoral studies entrants: 1 AHRC award (for UK/EU applicants only), a St Leonard's Scholarship (for all applicants), a George Buchanan Scholarship (for all applicants), and up to 2 new Macpherson Studentships. All scholarships cover three years of full-time study. It is hoped that a similar level of funding will be available for 2013 entrants.
AHRC Doctoral Awards
Through the Block Grant Scheme, The School of English at St Andrews has an AHRC studentship available to award to an eligible 2012 entrant.
To check eligibility, please review the relevant AHRC guidelines.
St Leonard's Scholarship
The St Leonard's Scholarship is funded jointly by the School of English and the office of the Provost of St Leonard's College, the institute representing the postgraduate community of St Andrews. Both Home/EU and Overseas students are eligible for this award.
An annual award amount of £12,500 is available for a 2012 entrant. This would be set against fees for an overseas student (ca. £13,050) or pay fees for a Home/EU student (ca. £3,828), with the remainder being used as a maintenance allowance.
A St Leonard's Scholarship may be held concurrently with another award, but please note that the amount of the St Leonard's Scholarship may be reduced if the combined awards total more than the fees due plus the equivalent of an AHRC maintenance grant (currently £13,590 p.a.).
George Buchanan Scholarship
This scholarship is funded by the School of English.
The award is equivalent to a current UK fee waiver (approximately £3,828) and is set directly against tuition fees. Both Home/EU and Overseas students are eligible for this award.
Macpherson Studentship
Up to two three-year Phd studentships will be made available for 2012 entrant students working in the area of Victorian and Edwardian Studies, in particular but not solely for those with interests in Ruskin, Hardy, or Kipling, and their respective circles. These awards, in addition to the 2011 Thomas Hardy Studentship, have been made possible by a generous donation from an alumnus of the University, E James Macpherson, MA (Hons) English Language and Literature, 1992.
Prospective applicants should contact the postgraduate secretary in the first instance for further information, but please note that a later study and scholarship application date of 1 May 2012 has been set for this studentship award. In addition to the usual study application documents, please simultaneously enclose the Macpherson Studentship Application Form (Word, 159 KB).
The Professor A F Falconer and Anna Cruickshank Postgraduate Scholarships
Information relating to the availability of this UK fee waiver equivalent award will be made known as soon as possible. Please check later. When available, both Home/EU and Overseas students are eligible for this award.
Applications
To apply for any of the above awards, please complete the downloadable PhD scholarship application form (Word, 161 KB) and submit it to the School of English by 1 March 2012. Please note that only those applicants who have already been guaranteed a place on their chosen programme by the deadline date will be considered. Study applications, including all supporting documents and references, must be received by 15 February 2012 to ensure that they can be processed before the cut off date for scholarships.
