Applications
The School of English accepts applications not later than 1 June for admission in September, but encourages much earlier submission. Applications are welcome via the University Postgraduate Application page and prospective MLitt students should note that the University of St Andrews now operates a fully automated online application system for all PGT courses. Further important information about this process, including details of the additional documents required specifically by the School of English, can be found in the relevant section below. Research applicants should, however, submit the required Application Form (PG Research) (PDF, 553 KB)and attach available documents to the email generated at application point, but send all other late documents in either electronic or hard copy directly to the PG Administrator at the School of English address below.
For all applicants, we recommend applying 10-12 months before you wish to start the programme. All prospective MLitt students and researchers who have forwarded complete study applications, including the required supplementary documents, to the School by 1 February will be considered for any School of English scholarship opportunities. Please check eligibility and School of English administered scholarship application requirements on our Funding.
Prospective PhD students should be aware that they are applying to work with an individual supervisor or supervisory team within the School of English, not to a programme of study. It is therefore vital that applicants look at the list of staff research interests, ensuring that their project matches an existing area of research in the School. Please feel encouraged to contact staff directly by email to ask whether a particular research proposal would be viable. In fact, such enquiries and early contact greatly speed up the application process.
Applicants are advised to read over the Additional required documents notes, and to anticipate those needs well in advance of the deadline. Details of admission procedures, funding opportunities, research facilities and so on can be found via the University's Postgraduate Admissions pages.
