Introducing IELS
The purpose of the In-sessional English Language Service (IELS) is to help students who are users of English as an additional language to develop their English language skills. The Service welcomes students of all language proficiencies.
IELS offers three main forms of provision: tutorials, workshop programmes and independent study material. In order to get the best out of IELS, it is a good idea to come along to an introductory tutorial. In this tutorial, your tutor will help you to determine and prioritize your needs and then develop an individual study programme based on this set of priorities. If you make use of the IELS tutorial provision, the first tutorial you attend will be an introductory tutorial.
Organising an Introductory Tutorial
Follow these steps in order to organize your introductory tutorial with IELS:
- Enrol on the IELS Moodle following the instructions given in the document.
- On the IELS Moodle, use the appropriate tutorial booking form according to your level of study, making a note of the date, time and tutor of the tutorial you have selected.
- On the IELS Moodle, use the relevant diagnostic tool(s) according to the language skill(s) you wish to develop.
- Transfer the results of your diagnostic test(s) on to the record sheet(s), which are in the same box as the diagnostic tools on the IELS Moodle.
- Download any available information about the IELS workshop programmes you might be interested in.
- Send an email to eltsupport. Attach your diagnostic record(s) to the email and in the body of the email give the date and time of the tutorial you have booked.
