English as a Foreign Language

ET1001 is a module where you can meet students from several different countries as its purpose is to develop confidence in the day-to-day use of English outside the classroom.  The focus of each class is different, but there are many points of crossover and common projects, many of which aim to develop the skills of problem solving, giving opinions, convincing others and expressing opinions in English.  This is not a class for developing academic writing skills - it is a class for sharing experiences with people from different countries and developing your ability to communicate with English speaking friends.

ET1002 looks at aspects of English where meaning is not always immediately obvious, such as idiomatic language, journalese, verse and drama.  The approach is similar to ET1001 in that each student's ability to develop communicative skills is regarded as the main aim of the course, although it is not necessary to have completed the first semester's module in order to take this one.  Drama has proved to be a popular part of this course as acting and play reading are very helpful in developing confidence in using the language and pronunciation and is also very enjoyable!
