Preparing to live and study in the UK

Studying in a new country can be both an exciting and daunting experience. There may be elements of the UK education system which are new or different for you, as well as cultural and social differences.

Prepare for success

We recommend you spend some time working through the interactive learning activities on the Prepare for Sucess website.

The activities will introduce you to:

  • differences in university study
  • different ways of being taught e.g. lectures, seminars, tutorials
  • using your study time effectively
  • how to adapt to a new culture and much more.

United Kingdom Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA)

The UKCISA website also contains lots of general information for international students who are getting ready to live and study in the UK.

The University and the town

When you arrive for your Pre-sessional course we will ensure that you are given support to settle in to your new life in St Andrews. During Orientation, we will assist you to register with a local doctor, open a bank account and register with the police, if necessary.

You will also meet representatives from different parts of the University such as Student Support Services, the Library and the Students' Association who will introduce you to the services and facilities available to you during your studies.

In the meantime, we suggest you read the following information on the University website which will help you to familiarise yourself with living and studying in St Andrews:
