10-week course content

Oral Presentations

Oral Presentations allow each student to practice delivering oral presentations on a theme related to their degree intention. Training is given in:

  • structuring a talk
  • selecting an appropriate style of language
  • developing awareness of the audience's needs
  • using notes to avoid reading from a script
  • using aids such as PowerPoint.

Writing

This component trains students in the processes of producing an academic essay and an academic report including:

  • using sources and avoiding academic misconduct (plagiarism)
  • structuring a paragraph
  • organising the essay/report
  • academic style
  • discourse markers
  • grammar.

The topics are related to degree intention and the report includes an element of research.

Reading

This component trains students in the process of:

  • sourcing materials
  • evaluating
  • paraphrasing/summarising.

Study Skills & Lecture Programme

This component prepares students for their lectures and connects their lectures to related seminars. The following skills will be covered:

  • note-taking
  • signposting in lectures
  • preparatory reading
  • reflective analysis
  • summarising.
