Secure English Language Tests (SELTs)
If you are an international student from outside the European Union, and you need a visa in order to study at the University you must:
- fulfil the English language requirements of your chosen programme and
- hold a UKBA-approved English language test certificate for the purposes of a Tier 4 student visa application.
The UKBA has produced a list of approved tests.
Although as a Highly Trusted Sponsor under Tier 4 the University can waive this requirement, this will be in exceptional circumstances only, and in line with UKBA guidance. Our strong recommendation is therefore that you take one of the approved tests before you apply.
The UKBA have designated some countries as 'majority English-speaking' countries. If you are from one of the following countries you are deemed to have automatically met the English language requirement, and are not required to hold an English language test certificate:
- Antigua and Barbuda
- Australia
- the Bahamas
- Barbados
- Belize
- Canada
- Dominica
- Grenada
- Guyana
- Jamaica
- New Zealand
- St Kitts and Nevis
- St Lucia
- St Vincent and the Grenadines
- Trinidad and Tobago
- the USA
Please note that this list does not include a number of countries, including Nigeria and India, where English is widely used. The UKBA nonetheless requires an approved test certificate in addition to any English language certification achieved at high school or college.
