About

Gonzalo obtained his MSc and PhD from the University of Manchester and his BSc (Lic) from Universidad Católica Boliviana in La Paz. Before embarking on his postgraduate studies he spent four years working at the Central Bank of Bolivia. He joined the School of Economics and Finance in September 2007. Prior to coming to St Andrews, Gonzalo was a Temporary Lecturer in Macroeconomics at the University of Manchester.

Research Interests

Gonzalo has research interests in the areas of economic growth and development; governance and corruption; inequality and income distribution.

At the moment, his research activity is concentrated on the theoretical analysis of the role of foreign aid in helping countries escape from poverty traps; the study of the links between corruption, social stigma and inequality; and the impact of corruption on human capital accumulation.
