Getting here
By air
The closest major airports are in Edinburgh (EDI) and Glasgow (GLA and PIK). From these airports one can proceed to St Andrews by hired car, bus or train. It is easier to get to St. Andrews from Edinburgh, but from some locations flights into Glasgow can be less expensive. Standard car hire is available from most major firms at these airports and in the city centres. Comprehensive train and bus information can be found at Transport Direct.
Be advised that if you are relying upon public transportation to return to the airport, it is preferable not to book return flights early in the morning. The reason for this is that neither buses nor trains run in the early morning hours (the earliest buses begin running around 6AM and the first train is usually around 6:30), and taxi service to the airports is available, but expensive.
By rail
St. Andrews does not have its own train station. The nearest station is Leuchars (5 miles away) on the main line from London (King's Cross) - Edinburgh - Aberdeen. Schedule information and online booking forms are available through First ScotRail, or through National Rail. Pre-booking is usually unnecessary if traveling by rail from Edinburgh, Glasgow or Aberdeen but is advisable if traveling from most other UK locations.
From Leuchars station St Andrews may be reached by car, taxi or bus. Buses to St. Andrews stop at Leuchars station 2 to 3 times per hour between 9am and 6pm and less frequently at other times (see here for timetables for buses 94/94A, 96, or 99/99A/99B). One can usually find taxis queued in front of the station at train arrival times (costs range between £6 and £10)
Again, see Transport Direct for help constructing an itinerary for travel.
