What our students say
Here are some comments from a selection of our former students.
Eamonn, UK - Graduated 2012
"As a serving clergyperson in the Scottish Episcopal Church, I felt the need to update my knowledge of theology and biblical studies, and to fill in some of the large gaps in my training. The Distance Learning M.Litt. exceeded all my expectations, in the level of stimulus and challenge, the excellence of the teaching and the support structures, and, not least, in the experience of fellowship offered by the residential weeks. Sharing the journey with others has forged friendships which will endure forever."
Nicky, UK - Graduated 2012
"This course gave me the chance to study theology after many years away from university. Being able to meet fellow students and have taught sessions in the beautiful surroundings of St Andrews was a real bonus and as well as being able to explore aspects of faith and Christian practice in which I have a particular interest I have made some wonderful new friends."
TC, Singapore - Graduated 2010
"This course recharged my faith and changed my life. With interesting subjects in a robust curriculum, a first rate teaching faculty who cared about you as individuals, all located in beautiful St. Andrews, and you are set for a great educational experience. However, what made it really special was the cohort of students and the community that was formed during the course. The combination of on line discussion forums and the onsite weekly sessions at the start of every term made for a truly unique fellowship environment. I would do it all again in a heartbeat if I could!"
Irena, Switzerland - Graduated 2009
"I heard about the course by chance, after I had given up the idea of completing my theological studies at Master level from abroad. “Bible and the Contemporary World” had proved to be what I was looking for: an on-site and from home, deep down and taking up learning experience.
Being a curate in the Reformed Church of Switzerland, I often go back to my course folders for inspiration and help – and always find both there."
ER, USA - Graduated 2009
"My experience at Saint Mary's School of Divinity was second to none. The environment was such that I did not feel I was a lone distant leaner rather, that I was a part of a Christian community of diverse and interesting people from around the globe.
While the residential weeks were short, great friendships developed that continue, and the beauty of Saint Andrews cannot be underestimated. The modules were always challenging, engaging and enlightening.
The Bible took on even more significance when applied to contemporary issues. The academic staff was always approachable and helpful. I highly recommend this program for its uniqueness and also for its very practical application for the Christian life."
Reid, Antigua - Graduated 2008
"The programme was enlightening and rewarding and has strengthened my ministry. It was well coordinated and great assistance was always given.
I was able to interact with persons from varying cultures whilst building academic and relational bonds. The programme has fueled a desire for further studies and I recommend this course to anyone as it offers quality education from scholars at a quality learning institution."
Kevin, USA - Gradated 2008
The Distance Learning MLitt served many important functions. The academic staff was second to none, and I was pleasantly surprised by the engagement of other students, faculty, and staff...it was a true community. Moreover, the MLitt, its structure, rigor, and high expectations, served to be more than sufficient to prepare and equip me for PhD work.
My experience with the Distance Learning MLitt has been truly life-enhancing and life-transforming--something I shall never forget.
David, USA - Graduated 2008
"The distance learning programme at St Mary's proved to be far more than an excellent academic experience. I do not exaggerate when I say it was a life-changing intersection of faith, knowledge, and relationship.
The caring guidance of instructors and the support of authentic community provided for a transformative education that has enlivened my spiritual journey in ways that words struggle to express."
Anne, UK - Graduated 2008
"As a grandmother and mother of two daughters I would never have believed that I could gain a Master of Letters degree in Theology.
There have been many contributory factors that have made the whole experience life enhancing. The online management of the course has been excellent, the content has been very stimulating and the tutors have been good teachers, leading us with thoughtful questions.
The beautiful location of St Mary's has enhanced the learning experience of the lectures. I have engaged in deep discussions with fellow Christians from all over the world, and the theological discipline of examining the Bible in the context of the contemporary world has helped my work as a Spiritual Director. It has definitely been one of the best decisions of my life to participate in this course."
Jen, USA - Graduated 2008
"I found St Andrews Distance Learning to be just what I, a mother of two in a frequently-moving military family, definitely needed. The quality of the program is second to none. The staff made every effort to ensure that we had as many benefits as the residential students.
I highly recommend this program to anyone interested in the esteemed education of St Andrews fused with the convenience of distant learning--not to mention the sheer fun of meeting interesting peers from all over the globe!
What an experience! I would do it all over again!"
