Structure
- M.Litt.: a postgraduate degree comprising three taught modules and a 15, 000 word dissertation.
- Postgraduate Diploma: an award comprising three taught modules.
- Individual Module.
This part-time distance learning programme is delivered online with an additional face-to-face component. Each module begins with a Residential Study Week held at St Mary's College, part of the University of St Andrews in Scotland. We require you to attend the first part of each Residential Week (Monday - Wednesday) and encourage you to remain for the remainder (Thursday - Friday).
This means that over the two-year programme you will come to St Andrews on four occasions, each for up to one week. At the Residential Study Week we will provide lectures, seminars and other activities which will launch you into the forthcoming module.
Each module comprises 15 weeks of study. This is typically divided into four units; the first three being four weeks long, the last unit being shorter at three weeks. Within each unit you will read set material and follow up other sources. For two weeks of a unit you will participate in online discussions with other students, moderated by your tutor. The remaining weeks of a unit are for your independent study.
Assignments are set for you to complete in relation to each module. Typically these will be four essays totalling 15,000 words for a module.
Individual Modules - it is possible to apply for admission to take just one or two modules. This is an ideal option if you know that you have only a limited window of opportunity in which to undertake part-time study. The normal entrance requirements must be met and you will be expected to participate fully and submit written work for assessment. The possibility of merely 'auditing' a module is not presently available. Should you later wish to re-register for the Postgraduate Diploma or the M.Litt. you can do so, again subject to the normal criteria and time limits.
