Bible and Contemporary Issues

BCI logo

Believing that the Bible can shape our thinking about issues of contemporary concern is one thing; working out how this is to be done is another. This module explores a variety of hermeneutical approaches that have been proposed to make intelligent connections between the Christian scriptures, events, trends and cultural assumptions.

We explore how the Hebrew Bible offers its own opportunities and challenges for social criticism. In a similar way, we consider methods of interpreting the New Testament traditions in relation to matters of public interest. In order to deepen our appreciation of the attempts of our forebears in their circumstances, we also take time to gain a historical perspective. By engaging with radical hermeneutical methods developed within liberationist, queer and post-colonial perspectives we bring our investigation back to our own contexts in the 21st century.

This module will be taught by a team of faculty who bring their own specialist knowledge and research interests to bear in what will become a staple component of our ‘Bible and the Contemporary World’ MLitt and PGDiploma programme.
