Scholar biographies

Joshua Msika – 1st Year Undergraduate
Joshua MsikaAfter a childhood spent travelling I now call Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, Canada home. However, St Andrews is gradually growing on me. The international nature of my upbringing and the variety of environments and cultures I saw during childhood have encouraged me to study for an undergraduate degree in Sustainable Development, a programme for which St Andrews has won several awards. In addition, I am taking courses in both Geoscience and Computer Science to ensure that I have a broad base from which to specialise in later years. My extracurricular involvements currently include acting in Romeo and Juliet, being Treasurer for the Transition St Andrews society, being a trainee Scottish Country Dance teacher and playing at the Whey Pat's traditional music session on Tuesday nights. I cannot say it enough: none of this would have happened without the support of the Ransome Trust.

Sarah Hurwit – 1st Year Postgraduate Sarah Hurwit
I am a 2006 graduate of Brown University with a degree in International Relations and honours in French Studies. Originally from Eugene, Oregon, I spent four years after graduation working in San Francisco for a government transparency software company. I founded and led the company’s corporate social responsibility programme, which inspired a return to my studies to facilitate a career transition to international non-profit work. For the past five years, I have volunteered as an international consultant and translator for AZUR Development, an NGO in Congo-Brazzaville focusing on disadvantaged populations. I am extremely grateful to be a recipient of the Dr Ernest L Ransome III Scholarship and for all the opportunities it has afforded me.
