St Andrews in the News

February 2012

Welcome

Patrick Degg

Welcome to the February issue of St Andrews in the News, our regular e-newsletter for alumni, friends and supporters around the world. The new year has already seen St Andrews recognised for the quality of our scientific research, the third time in recent months that we have been placed firmly in the world’s top hundred universities. Our academic standing has doubtless contributed to the large increase in applications from prospective students just announced – a hugely encouraging outcome when changes in higher education funding have resulted in an overall downturn in applications to UK universities. The challenge for the coming years, and the basis of our 600th Anniversary fundraising campaign, is to build on these achievements and create a financial environment whereby we can offer our students and researchers opportunities and facilities to rival any of our peer institutions around the globe. We hope you will join us in our Anniversary celebrations.

St Andrews in demand

Applications from prospective students to the university have increased by 17%, according to figures released by UCAS. A total of 13,696 prospective students have applied for a place at St Andrews in 2012 – equivalent to 10 applications for every available place. This is the largest number of applications ever received by St Andrews, and comes against a downturn in the UK HE sector as a whole.
