Proposal and Approval
Co-tutelle and Joint PhD Agreements
These are agreements between two or more institutions for joint supervision of a named student(s) on a named PhD programme. A co-tutelle agreement allows shared supervision to be recognised formally. Students studying under these agreements may be awarded a degree from a single institution or a joint degree via a single certificate which carries the insignia of both institutions. Students must spend at least a year (12 months) in total as a resident student at St Andrews in order for the University of St Andrews to recognise the degree.
St Andrews staff interested in setting up a new co-tutelle programme should complete the Memorandum of Agreement: Joint PhD or Co-tutelle Agreement (MoA Co-tutelle) template with details of the proposed programme and in consultation with the proposed partner institution. Please email collabs@st-andrews.ac.uk for a copy of the MoA Co-tutelle template.
Please complete the MoA Co-tutelle with reference to Co-tutelle Agreements: Approval Flowchart (PDF, 37 KB), which outlines all of the steps in the approval process.
Joint/Dual Degrees
These are degree programmes governed by a Memorandum of Agreement between the participating institutions drawn up for the purpose, which require students to spend a defined part of their degree programme at and often obtain credits from any of the participating institutions via a single certificate which carries the insignia of all participating institutions.
St Andrews staff interested in setting up a new joint/dual degree programme should complete the New Programme Proposal Form, available under Curriculum, with details of the proposed programme and in consultation with the proposed partner institution.
Please complete the New Programme Proposal Form with reference to Joint/Dual Degrees: Approval Flowchart (PDF, 37 KB), which outlines all of the steps in the approval process.
