Collaborations

The information contained here relates to collaborative activities which fall under the remit of the Collaborations Committee and which are the most common types of collaborative arrangements involving students (excluding exchanges and study abroad).

Types of Collaboration

There are two main types of collaboration under the remit of the Collaborations Committee:

  1. Co-tutelle and Joint PhD Agreements

These are agreements between two or more institutions for joint supervision of a named student(s) on a named PhD programme.  A co-tutelle agreement allows shared supervision to be recognised formally.  Students studying under these agreements may be awarded a degree from a single institution or a joint degree via a single certificate which carries the insignia of both institutions.  Students must spend at least a year (12 months) in total as a resident student at St Andrews in order for the University of St Andrews to recognise the degree.

  2. Joint/ Dual Degree Programmes

These are degree programmes governed by a Memorandum of Agreement between the participating institutions drawn up for the purpose, which require students to spend a defined part of their degree programme at and often obtain credits from any of the participating institutions via a single certificate which carries the insignia of all participating institutions.

Collaborations Committee

The TLAC Collaborations Working Group or Collaborations Committee was established in 2010.  Its membership comprises:

  • Proctor (Convenor)
  • Vice Principal (External Relations)
  • Dean of Arts
  • Dean of Science (at least one Dean to be present per meeting)
  • Director of Registry
  • Registry Manager (Collaborations & Study Abroad)
  • Executive Officer to the Senate (in the capacity of holder of the Register of Collaborative Arrangements for the University and recording of decisions and outcomes of the meetings of the Committee)

  2. To consider the University of St Andrews validation of degrees taught by other Higher Education Institutions.
  3. To consider and recommend approval of formal research partnership arrangements with other Higher Education Institutions.
  4. To monitor and advise on initiatives emerging through the Bologna Process.

Help and Advice

A help and advice point has been established within the Collaborations & Study Abroad team to support academic staff interested in establishing a collaborative agreement.  The Registry Manager (Collaborations & Study Abroad) acts as a central point of contact, providing advice and guidance on establishing collaborations, and liaising with Student Recruitment & Admissions, the Deans’ Office, Registry, the Principal’s Office and the Senate Office as appropriate.

Any staff who would like information or advice about creating a new collaborative arrangement should contact Samantha Lister, Registry Manager (Collaborations & Study Abroad): collabs@st-andrews.ac.uk
