Research profile

Research Interests

Pompeii, prosopography and social network analysis, volcanoes and earth science in antiquity, Vitruvius and Roman architecture, funerary customs, regulation of urban space and land use, gardens, the city of Rome, and graffiti.

Current research projects

In addition to revising my PhD dissertation for publication and a number of articles on Pompeian graffiti, projects currently in development include developing a new prosopography for Pompeii in order to conduct social network analysis, an assessment of the text of Vitruvius' De Architectura in conjunction with the reality of Roman building, and a compilation of evidence for volcanoes in antiquity.

Academic Career

After completing a BA in Anthropology and History at The American University in Washington, D.C., I moved to the UK for post-graduate studies at the University of Reading, where I obtained a MA in the City of Rome, and my PhD in Classics. My doctoral dissertation was a comparative study of the monumental tombs of Pompeii which used the development of commemorative styles of the funerary structures as a means for assessing the social, economic, cultural, and historical evolution of a specific population. After a teaching fellowship in ancient history at the University of Reading in 2011-12, I came to St. Andrews for a teaching fellowship in Ancient History & Archaeology.
