Research students

I have supervised research students on a wide variety of topics including Juvenal, Silver Latin Epic, comedy, biblical epic, and several patristic and later writers. I put special emphasis on independent critical thinking, stringent methodology and interdisciplinarity.

I have conducted master-classes for postgraduates at the Universities of Boulder/Colorado (poetry of the Early Roman Empire), Bochum/Germany (Augustine) and Utrecht/Netherlands (general methodological questions).

Together with one of our former postgraduates, Boris Dunsch (now teaching at the University of Greifswald/Germany), I organized a conference on 'Double Standards in the Ancient and Medieval World' at St Andrews, summer 1998, where a high percentage of the speakers were advanced postgraduates (see also select publications).

Teaching

Apart from contributing to shared courses on Classical literature and culture I am a specialist in teaching Roman epic and Late Imperial Literature.

Academic Career

After studying classics and divinity at the universities of Tübingen, Munich, Cambridge (GB) and Bochum, I took my first degrees in Greek, Latin, and Pedagogy (1989), and Divinity (1990) at Bochum University where I also completed my PhD on early Christian poetry (1991). My habilitation on Augustine's hermeneutics was completed at the University of Konstanz (1994).

After a research stay as an Alexander-von-Humboldt-fellow (Feodor-Lynen-programme) at University College, London I came to the University of St Andrews in 1995. Since then I have spent time as a visiting scholar at the universities of Vienna in Austria, of British Columbia (Vancouver) in Canada, the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, as a Charter Fellow at Wolfson College, Oxford, and as a Fellow-in-Residence at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study.
