Research profile

Research Interests

Cultural and intellectual history of the Roman Empire and early Middle ages; Ancient and medieval travel literature and geography; this history of childhood and education; the Near East from Alexander to early Islam and Byzantium.

Current research projects

My main project at the moment is a monograph based on my doctoral dissertation, exploring the transmission and literary usefulness of geographical knowledge in late antiquity. I am also currently studying social and cultural issues of ancient and medieval education: the role of children in Roman religion as part of their social education; Greek language Servius’ commentary on Virgil; and education in early medieval Italy. I am also preparing contributions on the popularizing geography of Solinus (3rd-4th c.), one of the most important sources of geographical information in the early middle ages.
