Greek programme requirements

Undergraduate admission

You do not need to have studied Greek at school in order to study it at St Andrews. Allocation to First level modules in Greek is made in accordance with linguistic competence at the time of enrolment.

Those qualified by Higher or A-level Greek (or equivalent) begin the session by study of selected texts in both prose and verse; while those with a lesser qualification, or no prior knowledge, begin by undertaking an intensive language module.

Complete beginners can proceed to an Honours Degree in Greek alongside those who have studied the subject at school.

The Second level modules introduce, among other things, the study of Hellenistic poetry and Imperial prose. Tutorials are held fortnightly. These deal primarily with linguistic instruction and literary discussion.

Undergraduate entry requirements

Greek: Single Honours

To enter Honours, the following conditions must be met

  • a minimum of 80 credits from 4 sub-honours modules in Greek
  • a minimum of  40 credits (2 sub-honours modules) at second-year level
  • grades of at least 11 in both second year modules

At Honours level, all students must write a dissertation in their final year. Seven other modules chosen from a wide selection in Greek, Classical studies and Ancient History enable students to tailor the degree to their interests.

Greek element of Joint degrees

Entry to Honours is the same as for Greek.

Students who have started their study of Greek in second year and passed both beginners Greek modules with a grade of 11 or better may enter Joint Honours Greek on condition that they take both Greek for Honours modules in their first year of Honours.
