Ancient History programme requirements

Undergraduate admission

You are not required to have any previous knowledge of Ancient History before signing up for our first year Ancient History modules. Second year modules build on the experience gained in first year. After that, you will need to qualify for admissions to Honours programmes, taught in years 3 and 4, as set out below.

You are not required to study either Latin or Greek, though you may do so if you wish. Ancient History texts are read in English translation.

Undergraduate entry requirements

Ancient History

To enter Honours, the following conditions must be met

  • 40 credits from the two first year modules in Ancient History
  • 40 credits from any two of the second year modules offered in Ancient History and Classical Studies
  • grades of at least 11 in both second year modules

At Honours level, all students must write a dissertation in their final year. Seven other modules chosen from a wide selection in Ancient History and Classical Studies enable students to tailor the degree to their interests.

Ancient History and Archaeology

Entry to Honours is the same as for Ancient History.

At Honours level, the module 'Principles and Techniques in Archaeology' is compulsory, along with a dissertation written in the final year. Further modules are chosen from a selection in Ancient History, Classical Studies and Mediaeval History.

Ancient History element of Joint degrees

Entry to Honours is the same as for Ancient History.

In most combinations, students take at least three modules from a wide selection of Ancient History and Classical Studies options; this may include a dissertation. At least one of the modules taken in the other subject must be at level 4. For combinations including two Modern Languages, only two Ancient History modules are taken.
