Greek, Latin and Greek and Latin
These three programmes are designed for students who have done a first degree in Greek or Latin language and literature, or in both Greek and Latin. The programmes are designed to offer postgraduate students the opportunity to study aspects of these languages and literatures in depth and also to acquire the research training that will enable them to undertake independent research. The programme in Greek & Latin caters both for students who have taken both languages, and for those who have studied just one of the languages to degree level and wish to learn the other.
There is an Erasmus agreement with the University of Leiden in the Netherlands open to postgraduate students seeking credit-bearing modules; St Andrews students may study in Leiden for one semester.
Degree Structure
The Postgraduate Diploma is awarded for satisfactory performance in taught modules worth a total of 120 credits in semesters 1 and 2. M Litt candidates must pass the Postgraduate Diploma, and then write a dissertation of up to 15,000 words over the summer on a topic approved by the Course Director.
All students take the core module, Themes and Methods in Classics, which is taught initially in conjunction with the core module in Ancient History, but then moves into more specialist areas for Classicists. This is a 60 credit module taught in weekly seminars throughout the year.
You should make your choice of modules in consultation with the Course Director who will enter your choices onto your computerised record when you matriculate. Subsequent changes of module need the approval of the Course Director.
Greek
In addition to the core module, you must take at least one 30 credit Greek module, which may include those listed below. The remaining 30 credits may be taken from the Greek modules, from any other M Litt taught modules offered in the School (Latin, Classical Studies or Ancient History), or, with the permission of the relevant Head(s) of Schools, modules offered by other Schools. M Litt students write a dissertation over the summer.

Greek and Latin

For those who have studied only one of the languages to degree standard, then a beginners' option is available: either both Greek 1 and Greek 2 (15 credits each) or both Latin I and Latin II (15 credits each). Both beginners' language options are taught over two semesters. You may not take both beginners' courses.
