British School at Athens Residential Internships

The School of Classics is delighted to announce a new collaboration between the British School at Athens  and the School. This year we have the opportunity to send three students to the British School to work for two weeks each. The School is offering two Archive Internships and one Fitch Lab Internship.

Archive internship:

The BSA Archives  contain one of the world’s most valuable archival resources.  The archives house material from British excavation undertaken in Greece and beyond from c. 1886, including material from Knossos and Crete, Melos and Lesbos, Sparta and areas within Turkey. The Archives also house letters and notebooks from 19th century travellers (such as Finlay and Gell) and the important Byzantine Research Fund (an invaluable record of photographs and drawings undertaken by British Architects of Byzantine Monuments in the Mediterranean world).

The archivist will provide the intern with a set project (usually adaptable to the interest of the intern) and will provide them with training and hands-on experience.

Fitch internship (Available in May or August only):

The Fitch Laboratory  is a leading research laboratory in the Mediterranean. While it focuses primarily on ceramic petrography, environmental analysis and animal bones, it works closely in collaboration with the American School’s Wiener Laboratory which focuses on human remains as well as other material culture.

The Fitch Lab Director will provide the intern with a set project (usually adaptable to the interest of the intern) and will provide them with training and hands-on experience.

Practical Arrangements

In all cases, the intern will be based at the hostel of the British School at Athens at their own cost  and by arrangement with the BSA Admissions secretary.

The intern will pay for their own travel to Athens and we are fortunate in that there are now direct flights between Athens & Edinburgh.

The BSA will provide Membership and a Free Entry Pass to sites and Museums in Greece which is valid for a year.

Although the School of Classics can provide advice, students undertake these internships at their own risk and are encouraged to take out full travel insurance and a European Health Card.

Eligibililty and Financial assistance

  • Honours students will be given priority.
  • Students of the School of Classics are eligible to apply for Mitford funding to help cover the costs of these internships.
  • Students planning on undertaking further degrees in Archaeological Science will be given priority for the Fitch Lab internship.
