How to submit coursework

In the School of Classics you must submit two copies of your coursework. One will be on paper and the other will be electronic.

I - Identifying your work

Before submitting either copy, make sure the marker can identify it.

  1. To do this, download the School’s essay cover sheet from the School’s website: Cover sheet for assessed work (Word, 29 KB)
  2. Paste the cover sheet in as the first page of your essay.

  3. Fill in the cover sheet with your matriculation number, the module code, the title of your essay, your tutor’s name, which essay this is, and the date and word-count.
  4. Do not put your name anywhere on the cover sheet or in your essay. All coursework is marked anonymously: put only your matriculation number on your work to identify your work.
  5. When you have pasted the cover sheet into your essay and filled it in, save your essay again.
    • Your essay must be saved in one of the following formats: .doc, .docx or .rtf

II. Now you are ready to upload the electronic copy of your essay.

  1. Log in to MMS using your university username and password. You will be taken to the screen displaying your modules:
  2. Click on the link to Coursework to go to the coursework upload screen.

  3. On the coursework upload screen, you will see your name (make sure you are logged in as yourself!) and a box for uploading coursework for each assessment.CL_sbmt-crswrk-3
  4. Click the browse button to select the file from your computer’s hard drive.
  5. Click Upload to submit your work.
    • Make sure you have uploaded your work into the box for the right assessment!
    • If you have submitted your work for the wrong assessment deadline, or if you have uploaded the wrong file by mistake, select it using the check-box on the right and then click ‘Delete Selected Files.’ (If the deadline has passed, you will not be able to do this. If this happens, let your tutor know as soon as possible.)
  6. MMS will rename your file with your username and the assessment for which it was submitted, so don’t worry if you download a copy from MMS and it is called something different.
  7. That’s it! You have uploaded your work to MMS.

III. Now submit the paper copy

  1. Print your essay out, including the cover sheet on the front page.
  2. Staple the pages together (please – it makes a real mess in the pigeonholes if you don’t).
  3. Post it into your tutor’s pigeonhole in the entrance to Swallowgate.
If your essay is late, take it to the School Office instead!

IMPORTANT: your tutor will mark the paper copy, but it is the electronic copy that determines whether your essay is late or not. If you are in doubt, upload the electronic copy first. Beware: MMS is very literal-minded when it comes to deadlines: 4.59pm is on time, but 5.01pm is late.
