Studying archaeology (postgraduate)

The University of St. Andrews has a lively and successful postgraduate community and a proven track record in both taught courses and research degrees. General information about graduate applications is available at: Graduate Study at St. Andrews.

Research students are admitted only if the university is satisfied not only of the applicant's abilities but also of the University's capacity to provide adequate supervision and resources. For many areas of archaeological research (especially prehistory, archaeological science and the archaeology of regions outside Europe and the Near East) candidates may be best advised to apply to other institutions. Candidates with an interest in studying these areas in Scotland are referred to the departments of archaeology at Edinburgh and at Glasgow.

The University of St. Andrews does, however, have nationally recognised strengths in some areas including Museum Studies. In addition, individual members of staff are especially well qualified to teach and supervise postgraduates in a number of areas, for instance the archaeology of Greece, early mediaeval Scotland, the Viking world, the Roman army, the archaeology of the city of Rome, Roman Gaul and the ancient economy. A good indication of our strengths is provided by the interests of current staff members involved with archeology.
