Opportunities for Postgraduate Study in the School of Chemistry
PhD studentships
A large number of fully-funded PhD Studentships are available.
Most of the funded places are earmarked for UK and EU citizens, and therefore candidates should be UK or EU citizens and hold, or expect to obtain, a 1st class or 2.1 B.Sc. or MChem degree, or its European equivalent. Funded studentships cover all fees (at the UK/EU rate), and a full stipend (£13590 per year tax-free for 2012/3 starts).
Information on research projects for postgraduate study at St Andrews
Download our Chemistry Leaflet - 2013 Entry (PDF, 1,048 KB) guide, together with the current postgraduate prospectus.
Interested students should first consult staff webpages or the EaStCHEM's research strengths page for a list of themes and links to research interests pages of members of staff. You can view staff research interests by clicking on the photo of the staff member on the staff list. Many staff also maintain their own research group pages which provide more details about their research. Some current PhD projects are listed on FindAPhD.com and jobs.ac.uk.
If you wish, you may arrange an informal visit or attend a postgraduate visiting day (organised by the University or the School of Chemistry) before submitting a formal application, or you can attend one of our EaStCHEM Postgraduate Recruitment Fairs. When you are ready to apply, please see our Enquiries and Applications.
You can find out what it is like to live in St Andrews by consulting the links on our prospective students pages and the University prospective postgraduates site.
Postgraduate Study Other Than PhD
Besides the full-fledged PhD programme, there are possibilities to enroll for shorter taught and/or research-based postgraduate courses in Chemistry. The MPhil programme is comprised of a mostly taught first year, followed by a one-year research project with a supervisor from the staff list. Well-qualified candidates may be admitted directly into the second, research-based year. The MSc programme is essentially a one-year taught course with a short research-based project (for more information on the course structure see the MSc Chem Sci (PDF, 78 KB) brochure). Funding opportunities are much more limited for these shorter programmes (for the tution fees they attract see Financial information). For more information contact Prof Michael Bühl. Applications can be made online.
