| Course | MPhil Polar Studies Student (continuing to a PhD in October 2012) |
| What has been your route to getting to your current position? | I applied for the MPhil in Polar Studies in early 2011 and was accepted. I have recently found out that I have been awarded a NERC Scholarship to continue my research onto a PhD. |
| What does your job involve? |
I am investigating the flow and sensitivity of Rink Glacier in Greenland using computer models. I am particularly interested in how the release of icebergs (calving) is affected by melt by warm water in the glacier’s fjord. Over the course of my PhD I hope to improve my model and extend it to other outlet glaciers in Greenland. |
| What are the best bits of your job? | Working on something which I find very interesting. |
| Why you were successful | I was motivated to succeed by my interest in glaciology. |
| What skills/knowledge from your degree have you found particularly helpful in this role? |
I took the Advanced Glaciology module in my 3rd year, which is when I first developed a keen interest in glaciology. I found the review essay in 4th year very useful as it allowed me to develop a more specialised knowledge of my particular region of interest. I have found being able to use GIS software extremely useful in my degree. |
| What advice would you give to students wishing to follow the same path? |
Send lots of emails. Most academics are very happy to reply to people who show an interest in their work, and it can make a good first impression before a formal application. |
