Getting a job in TV journalism is notoriously difficult – lots of people want one so you need to stand out from the crowd. You should ALREADY be a news fiend – if you don’t read at least one newspaper every day, if you don’t watch and listen to several news bulletins every day, this probably isn’t the career for you.

You must get lots of work experience. Hopefully, you’re already involved in the student paper. Approach your local newspaper or radio station. Try to spend some time in a TV newsroom or with a magazine. You won’t be taken seriously if you haven’t got loads of work experience under your belt.

Use the Career Service. They really are excellent in there. They can give you loads of advice about post graduate courses. They have contact details for lots of former students who are now successful journalists. Don’t ever be afraid to phone or write to people to ask for help and advice - persistence is a really good trait in this business. No particular degree subject rules you in or out of a career in journalism. All you need is a good head on your shoulders. English is an obvious choice of subject, but languages are good too – they’re all about communicating, which is essentially what you do as a journalist.

Journalism is a brilliant career. You get to do some great things in all sorts of places with some really interesting people. Enjoy it.
