General Information

This is an aggregation of various internships throughout the U.S. It is by no means a complete list, but rather a starting point from which you can broaden your search. You should research the industry in which you hope to work to understand how internships are organized in that field. You should also check out work experience and US-Related Fellowships for additional information and opportunities. For information on full-time employment, visit Working in the US.

Funding

As many internships are unpaid, you might need to find ways to fund your summer. Here are a few tips on how to do that:

Here are some sites that may help you secure funding:

Credit

Some employers may require university recognition of their internship experience as academic credit. While the University cannot offer credit in exchange for work experience, we are able to offer you points towards the Certificate in Career Development (CCD). This has typically met the employer's needs. If you need confirmation on this matter, please direct the employer to the Director of the Careers Centre, Mr. Paul Brown.

International Applicants/Visas

International students looking to intern in the US have to meet certain visa requirements to commence their internship. J-1 Exchange Visitor visas are typically ones needed for internship placements.

Finding a Sponsor

In order to take part in the J-1 Intern Programme, you need to find an approved visa sponsor who will supervise the application process and act as the main point of contact throughout the exchange programme process. You will be charged a fee for this service, which may vary from sponsor to sponsor. Check out costs before you start. The Fulbright Commission has some good advice on Programme Application, Visa and Sponsors.

You can carry out your own search for an approved sponsor, but here are a few examples:
