Why work experience is important

Employers and postgraduate course selectors look for evidence of skills such as teamwork, communication, flexibility, initiative and problem solving often gained from work experience.  Relevant work experience is essential for some career areas and a big advantage for most. Work experience gives you interview practice, helps you try out career options, improves your knowledge of yourself and builds your confidence, enables you to make contacts to act as referees and may lead to a permanent job offer.

Work experience case studies

Written by St Andrews students, work experience case studies provide real life accounts of students who have carried out work experience jobs with a wide variety of organisations. Pick up hints and tips including finding opportunities, application and selection processes and skills required.    If you have undertaken any type of work experience, then why not inspire students by sharing your story.

Recognition for internships in the USA

Students applying for internships in the USA may find that employers ask for university recognition of their experience. The employer often requests academic credit recognition which the university cannot offer for assessment reasons.  However, such employer's requirements are usually met by informing them that a written report on the internship will contribute towards The St Andrews Award offered by the Careers Centre.  If the employer requires individualised confirmation for this purpose their enquiry should be directed to Mr Paul Brown, Director of the Careers Centre, pfb1@st-andrews.ac.uk.
