The logo for the conference in June 2013.

‘Research Futures’ was an annual fixture at St Andrews from 2006-2009. After a hiatus of 4 years this conference will return in 2013.   Previously the focus of this conference was specifically on career development issues for researchers – ‘Planning your future in research and beyond..’ as the by-line had it.   For the new Research Futures conference the emphasis will be more on examining current themes in research. It will be more about the future of research in higher education than on future of the individual researcher.

Programme

The first of the new Research Futures conferences will take place on 4 June 2013 and will focus on Public Engagement and Impact. As well as contributors from our own institution there will be a diverse mix of presenters and workshop leaders from other institutions, organisations, publications and public bodies.   Already confirmed are:

  • Paul Manners, Director of the National Coordinating Council for Public Engagement (NCCPE),
  • Hannah Crookes, Director of Science, Learning and Public Engagement at the Dundee Science Centre,
  • Steve Farrar, UK Editor of the Journals of Improbable Research and UK lead for the Ignoble Awards, and
  • Suzanne Spicer, co-author of the Vitae Publication ‘the Engaging Researcher’.

More contributors will be announced over the next few months.

Who can apply?

It is aimed at research staff, research-active academic staff as well as research students from St Andrews, a number of places will also be offered to other Scottish HEIs, and the conference will therefore be an excellent opportunity to network with researchers for other disciplines and other Universities.

We will be providing more information and booking details shortly and will be publicising across the University.
