BSRC has a number of studentships funded by the BBSRC and MRC. The MRC studentships are for 4 years for specific training in Molecular Virology. The BBSRC studentships are for 4 years, or 3 years if you already have a Masters.
The BBSRC/MRC studentships have the following restrictions on eligibility:
UK students Applications are welcome from UK students with a 1st class degree or an upper second. The BBSRC/MRC studentship would cover your fees and stipend (currently £13,590 per annum for BBSRC and £15,000 per annum for the MRC Molecular Virology PhD).
EU students If you have been resident in the UK for 3 years or more prior to the date you would start a PhD, then your fees and stipend can be covered. Otherwise, the studentships can provide fees, but not a stipend. You would need to explore funding opportunities with ourselves, and/or consider self-funding of your stipend, for which you should budget around £13,000 per annum.
Non-EU overseas students The BBSRC/MRC funding cannot fund any part of your studentship. Overseas fees at St Andrews are £14,350 for 2011-12, and likely to rise in subsequent years. In addition, you would need funds to cover your accommodation and subsistence during the 4 years. The University does have some SORSAS awards, that fund the £11,000 per annum difference between home and overseas fees. The University can also provide some support for stipends under the SORSAS scheme, which is a highly competitive. The deadline for applications to SORSAS is February 2011.
From time to time other forms of postgraduate funding are available with less restrictions on nationality.
If you are eligible for applying for a government scholarship from your home country, then we will welcome your application and will help you through the process of applying. Please contact pgrecbiology@st-andrews.ac.uk.
