The Sir Kenneth Dover Scholarship for the School of Classics

Sir Kenneth Dover, University Chancellor from 1981 - 2005

A Wardlaw Scholarship

As one of the Wardlaw Scholarships at the University, the Sir Kenneth Dover Scholarship will ensure an undergraduate student in financial need is able to take up their place in the School of Classics, and to benefit from all that the University has to offer.

Wardlaw Scholarships provide assistance to talented undergraduate students in financial need and ensure that St Andrews can be the first choice for the brightest students, irrespective of their circumstances. This fosters a more inclusive, diverse and supportive academic environment in which all students can realise their full potential.

Sir Kenneth commanded the affection and respect of his colleagues and his students.  He was celebrated by students in 2006 when he was made Honorary President of the Students’ Association.  A scholarship in his name is both a fitting and memorable tribute to his life and work.

Sir Kenneth enjoyed a distinguished academic career and received a knighthood in 1977 for services to Greek Scholarship.   His scholarly works include Greek Word Order (1960), Aristophanic Comedy (1972), Greek Homosexuality (1978) and The Greeks and their Legacy (1989).

Sir Kenneth Dover became Professor of Greek at the University of St Andrews in 1955, and was twice Dean of the University’s Faculty of Arts during his initial 21 years with us. In 1981, Sir Kenneth returned as our Chancellor, a role which he executed with dedication and style until his retirement on 31 December 2005.
