Location

St Andrews is a small town of around 18,000 people situated on its own bay beside the North Sea on the east coast of Scotland about 50 miles north of Edinburgh, Scotland's capital city. Beautiful old stone buildings, quaint narrow lanes and broad, tree-lined streets contribute to the unique, safe and tranquil atmosphere of St Andrews.

The University, Scotland's oldest and the third oldest in Britain, was founded in 1413 and has a deserved world-wide reputation for teaching and research which makes it one of the "Ivy League" universities in Britain.

Background and philosophy

Founded twelve years ago, this is the only pre-college programme which is officially run by a British university.

The St Andrews Programme is designed to give students a real college-level academic experience focusing on the theme of Scottish Studies.

The curriculum will provide a fascinating insight into many aspects of Scottish culture, history and politics. Lectures will be given by full-time faculty of the University (mainly from the Schools of Art History, History and English). There will also be an emphasis on the traditional British approach of seminars and tutorials, which will be led by graduate students. This approach fosters close relationships between staff and students and an intellectually stimulating environment within which to develop students' academic skills. In addition there will be a number of distinguished external speakers. Students have access to the superb University Library with almost a million items - some dating back to before the advent of the printing press!

The academic programme is enriched by extensive field trips to important historical sites and cultural enrichment is provided for by visits to art galleries, concerts and plays.

The majority of students attend the Programme in order to broaden their academic skill base and to experience college-level teaching and learning in the distinctive Scottish system. The Programme has also been given accreditation under the SCOTCAT system which is readily convertible into high school credits.
