Science Summer Programme

Saturday 29th June - Saturday 27th July 2013

The Science Summer Programme is modelled on the University’s highly successful and well established summer programmes in Scottish Studies and Creative Writing. The programme is suitable for students who have successfully followed a high school curriculum to at least 10th grade or equivalent. It is designed to give students a real college-level academic experience focusing on various science disciplines.

For more details please download our brochure: International Summer Programmes 2013 (PDF, 2,930 KB)

The curriculum comprises input from academic Schools within the Faculty of Science, which include Mathematics and Statistics, Geography and Geosciences, Biology, Physics and Astronomy*, Chemistry and Psychology. Participants study four subjects during the month-long programme.  The specific subjects for inclusion in the 2013 programme will be confirmed as soon as possible.  Lecture content will be complemented by extensive practical sessions in the laboratories and on field trips.

The Summer Programme will be taught by fulltime faculty from the University of St Andrews. Experienced graduate students will be involved in leading laboratory sessions. The teaching approach fosters close relationships between staff and students and provides an intellectually stimulating environment within which participants can develop their academic and scientific skills.

The academic programme is enhanced by field trips to sites of scientific interest and cultural enrichment is provided through additional excursions and activities. On average students will spend 3 to 5 hours each day in lectures and laboratory sessions or on associated field trips. The majority of summer programme students attend in order to broaden their academic skill base and to experience college-level teaching and learning in the distinctive Scottish system. There will be an opportunity to meet with Admissions staff and to find out about application to UK universities. Students receive a certificate from the University of St Andrews to confirm their successful completion of the programme.

* Please note that applicants should be able to demonstrate a good background in Physics and Mathematics in order to gain admission to the Science Summer Programme. Students will be required to provide a recommendation from their science teacher.

Location

St Andrews is a small town of around 18,000 people situated on its own bay beside the North Sea on the east coast of Scotland about 50 miles north of Edinburgh, Scotland's capital city. Beautiful old stone buildings, quaint narrow lanes and broad, tree-lined streets contribute to the unique, safe and tranquil atmosphere of St Andrews.

The University, Scotland's oldest and the third oldest in Britain, was founded in 1413 and has a deserved world-wide reputation for teaching and research which makes it one of the "Ivy League" universities in Britain.  St Andrews has been named as one of the world's leading centres for scientific research in a recent international ranking (see www.leidenranking.com).
