External Scholarships for UK/EU Students

The following scholarships are administered and funded outside the University of St Andrews but may be available to eligible students who wish to attend the University.  Further details about each award can be found at the websites linked below. 

 Angus Council Trust

The Trust awards grants to Angus residents for undergraduate university courses, as well as providing financial assistance to young people travelling abroad for educational purposes.  Further information is available from the Angus Council Trust Website.

The Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland

The Trust is prepared to consider applications for assistance with fees by students of Scottish birth, parentage or schooling for courses leading to a first degree of a Scottish University. Such assistance will not be given to supplement an award from the Scottish Awards Agency (SAAS) or a local authority.

Duncan Trust

Grants are available from the Duncan Trust to students who are training, or who intend to train, for the Ministry of the Church of Scotland (regular or modified course). The grants may be awarded at any time during the students' course in the Faculty of Arts or the Faculty of Divinity, but not after completion of the normal BD degree programme. Preference is given to applicants within the Presbytery of Angus and Mearns. Application should be made to Clerk to the Duncan Trust, Thorntons W.S. Brothockbank House, Arbroath, Angus DD11 1NF.

Katherine Smith Bursary

Open only to candidates who have been educated at St Leonards School. Further information is available from St Leonards School, St Andrews, KY16 9QJ.

Leverhulme Trade Charities Trust

The Leverhulme Trade Charities Undergraduate Bursaries are designed to provide support for eligible UK students i.e. those who are (or who are connected with) Commercial Travellers, Grocers or Chemists, in financial need undertaking full-time Undergraduate degree courses at institutions in the United Kingdom, leading to recognised qualifications.

The Maxton Bequest

Under the provisions of this Bequest, young persons who were born or one of whose parents was ordinarily resident within the Parish of Crieff or Burgh of Kirkcaldy at the time of birth, and having completed the period of compulsory attendance at school, may qualify for benefit to enable them to continue their education or to serve an apprenticeship. The Trustees may give preference to minors and those in greater need of financial assistance.

The Menzies Bursaries

The bursaries are awarded for a period of four years to persons entering on a course of study for a degree at any of the Universities of Edinburgh, Glasgow or St Andrews. The bursaries are awarded for those falling into one or several of the following categories and in the following order of preference.

  1. Relatives of the Founder James Menzies.
  2. Those of the name Menzies.
  3. Those born on the Menzies Estates (in the Parishes of Dull, Weem and Fortingall).
  4. To persons considered by the Trustees best qualified and most deserving.

The current level of the bursary is £375 per annum and application should be made to Blackadders Solicitors, 30 & 34 Reform Street, Dundee, DD1 1RJ.

The Perth and Kinross Educational Trust

Under the provisions of the Trust persons belonging to the former County of Perthshire, that is those who were born and educated there, may qualify for bursaries for further education; special grants for mature students; grants for second or subsequent degrees; grants for student apprentices or travel scholarships/grants.

Application forms for consideration by the Trustees must be lodged with the Solicitors, who will advise you on the closing date for application. They may be obtained from the Neighbourhood Manager, Perth and Kinross Council, Neighbourhood Office, Lodge Street, Crieff, or from the Solicitors, Messrs. Gibson and Spears, Dow and Son, 9 East Fergus Place, Kirkcaldy, Fife KY1 1XU.

TOEFL Merit Scholarship Program

This scholarship program is designed to award TOEFL test takers for achieving academic excellence, exhibiting leadership skills, performing extracurricular activities and demonstrating English-communication proficiency. For further information, please visit the TOEFL website.
