The Faculty of Arts is comprised of ten Schools and is led by the Dean of Arts Students studying in the Faculty of Arts will study modules offered by a wide range of Schools including Art History, Modern Languages, History, Classics, Philosophy, Social Anthropology, Film Studies, Economics, Management, International Relations and English.
Degree Structure
The Faculty provides a variety of modular programmes leading to the degree of Master of Arts (MA). As with all degree programmes at St Andrews, it is made up of credit bearing modules. Students must earn between 360-480 credits, depending on the degree and over the duration of the programme with 120 credits normally earned each academic year.
The first two years of study include core modules specific to the programme as well as other modules chosen from a range of options (in some cases, including modules from a different Faculty) and in Second year with a minimum of 80 credits of 2000 level modules.
The final Third and Fourth year provides an opportunity to study a minimum of 60 credits in each semester at 3000 and 4000 level modules, which offer advanced research-led learning. At least 90 credits taken in Third and Fourth years must be at 4000 level.

Teaching, learning and assessment in the Faculty of Arts is progressive, with both the content and methods of delivery changing to suit the increasing level of complexity in the material, and independence of students, as they work through the programme.
