Choose your Faculty
Within each of the University's four Faculties (Arts, Divinity, Medicine, Science) academic disciplines are grouped into Schools. Since admission to the University is by Faculty, prospective students need to choose the Faculty whose subject groupings interest them most and within which they intend to take their degree, bearing in mind that some Schools cross the Arts / Science divide.
Students normally belong to a Faculty throughout their university career and take subject modules offered by several Schools, some of which may be in another Faculty. For example, a Science student may wish to take a First level module in French or History. Another student may wish to take a module in Moral Philosophy even though they are in the Faculty of Divinity. This is possible, provided there is no timetable clash.
Each of the four Faculties has its own Faculty Entrance requirements which must be satisfied in addition to the subject specific entry requirements.
Notes:
- Faculty of Medicine. Students from outwith the Faculty of Medicine will not be able to study any element of the Medicine programme.
- Prerequisites. Some First level modules require a qualification in a particular subject, or entrance qualifications achieved at a particular grade level, e.g. to take French modules you must have Maths or French at Higher, A-level or equivalent. To take an International Relations module not required as part of your degree programme you must have AAAB at Higher, AAB at A-level or 38 points at IB or equivalent. At Second level (2000 modules) most modules require you to have successfully completed the required first level modules in those subjects.
Direct entry into Year Two of the Faculty of Science. Students who are admitted directly into the second year in the Faculty of Science and who subsequently wish to change Faculties may lose their Advanced Standing credits as the Faculty of Arts does not award such credits.
