Introduction to the Evening Degree
What is it?
- A Master of Arts (MA) General degree or NEW B Sc General Science degree, with modules in a variety of Arts, Science and social science subjects.
- A face-to-face course one or two evenings a week in St Andrews.
- Plus several hours per week studying independently in your own time.
- A chance to prove yourself.
but it isn't
- A distance learning or correspondence course.
- An easy ride.
Who is it for?
- Those who would find it hard to study full-time because of work, health or family commitments.
- Those who have the ability and determination to work for a degree but don't necessarily have traditional or recent school-leaving qualifications.
- Those who can get to St Andrews one or two evenings a week in term time (30 weeks a year).
- Those who feel they have the ability, but just need the opportunity.
- Those who are thinking about updating their skills with a view to increasing their employability.
What's involved?
To complete the MA General degree or B Sc General Science degree will take
- 9 years if you pass one module per semester.
- 4½ years if you pass two modules per semester.
- fewer than 4 years if you are given Transferred Credit for previously completed qualifications.
How hard would I have to work?
For each module, you should expect to spend one evening a week in St Andrews (6:30 - 9:30pm) and about 8-12 hours per week studying independently. So, if you're thinking of taking two subjects at a time, you should allow:
- at least 26 hours studying time per week
- plus travelling time to and from your classes, and time for library work.
