Entry Requirements for the Evening Degree

What entry qualifications do I need?

Entry requirements are more flexible than they are for full-time degree programmes. You should normally have:

  • Passes at Standard Grade (grades 1,2 or 3) or GCSE (grade A, B or C) or an equivalent in English and Mathematics or a Science.
  • Evidence of English language competence, if your first language is not English.

You may also have:

  • Highers or A-levels or the International Baccalaureate.
  • An approved Access course.
  • HNC, HND or Higher National units.
  • A degree or partially-completed degree.
  • Professional qualifications, e.g. in nursing, accountancy, banking, social work.
  • Successful completion of courses provided by the University of St Andrews Open Association will also be positively viewed as part of an application portfolio, as evidence of a commitment to and experience of learning.

How many credits can I transfer from other qualifications?

  • Up to 180 (i.e. half the total required for the MA General Degree or B Sc General Science degree)
  • The amount of transferred credit that can be awarded will be determined by the overall relevance of that learning to the degree programme, and will take account of levelvolume and currency of what has been learned.

If you wish to apply for Transferred Credit, you should discuss it at your Evening Degree interview and - of possible - provide a second academic reference from the institution that awarded the qualification (ideally, someone who taught you).
