Accommodation
One of the great strengths of the University of St Andrews is its residential system and the variety and range of its residential accommodation. The University is unique among other Scottish universities in the extent and variety of its residential accommodation. Nearly two-thirds of our students live in University owned accommodation.
Single undergraduate students in their first year are given special priority and, under normal circumstances, are guaranteed accommodation usually in a Hall of Residence provided they apply by 31 May in the year of entry.
Each residence has a mixed population of first year and returning students, Home and Overseas sutudent as well as students from different Faculties. Living in a residence in your first year is the best possible start for your studies. Currently the hall population is made up of 34% returning students and 66% first year students.
How and when to apply
If you have been made an offer of a place to study for the current year at St Andrews you will receive an application for accommodation in your Offer pack. The application is at the back of the Residence brochure or you can apply on line by clicking on to the link "How to apply" below. You can contact us by emailing Student Accommodation Services for any further information.
Applications for accommodation must be submitted to Student Accommodation Services by 31 May and will be acknowledged by email. The address for postal applications is on the application form and will be acknowledged by Post.
- For more information see: How to apply - New undergraduates
Student Accommodation Services do not pre-allocate accommodation to students. Allocation begins in June for students whose offer of a place is Unconditional and who have confirmed their acceptance of this place with Admissions. Thereafter, allocations continue throughout the summer as and when final examination results are received and the status of individual UCAS applications changes from Conditional to Unconditional.
Once accommodation has been allocated you will receive a link by email directing you to your e-contract, which needs a reply within 10 days. As we have experienced problems with some email addresses not accepting the automated offer we advise you to check this link regularly once you have accepted your unconditional offer: Residence e-contract. Accommodation contracts are for a fixed period of the full academic session unless you are only studying here for one semester.
Tours of Halls of Residence
If you choose to attend one of our Visiting Days there will be the opportunity to visit a hall of residence on a guided tour. Otherwise, you may wish to view our brief guide to residences.
