Frequently asked questions about Summer English courses at the University of St Andrews

What courses do you run?
We have courses in General English and in English for Business.
When do the courses run?
They usually run in late July and August.
How long are the courses?
Students come for a minimum stay of 2 weeks, but can stay longer.
What is the timetable?
There are 20 hours of lessons per week over 4 mornings and 4 afternoons
Are there any other activities?
We organise two coach trips per week to local places of interest, Edinburgh, whisky distilleries, castles etc. There is also a Ceilidh (a Scottish dance) with a live band, which is a lot of fun.
Are there any sports facilities?
The University has very good sports facilities which students can use for a small fee.
Can you tell me about the accommodation?
We offer self-catering accommodation in new buildings with private bathrooms. Students can have single occupancy or couples can share a room (please note that there is one double bed, not two single beds!).There is one kitchen between 5 rooms.
Can I have a double room with my partner?
Yes, the cost of the room is divided between you. (please note, there is one double bed in each room. It is not possible to have 2 single beds).
Are the courses suitable for children?
No. These courses are for adults. We have a separate course for teenagers, but we do not accept unaccompanied participants. If you wish to travel with your children or would like information on possible groups from your country, or would like to organise a group, please contact us directly (email: afa@st-andrews.ac.uk).
Are the courses suitable for complete beginners?
No. We can, however, accept students at a low elementary level.
Are students tested when they arrive?
Students are assessed on the first day of a course, sometimes through a formal test and sometimes through assessed performance in a class. They are then allocated a class for the rest of the course.
Is there a certificate at the end of the course?
There is a certificate of attendance.

How and when should I pay?
We require full payment when the booking is made. Credit cards can be used. Please contact us for details of how to do this. If you would like to make a bank transfer, the details are available in the .
Please note however that we will require you to pay for bank charges and these can be as high as £25 per transfer.
