British Chamber of Commerce in Germany Foundation Scholarship

Citizens of the the UK are eligible to apply for awards for study or research in Germany, and German citizens for awards for study or research in the UK. Applicants should be undertaking full time courses of study at universities leading to degrees, diplomas or equivalent qualifications.

British Federation of Women Graduates

The National BFWG awards are awarded to women research students for their final year of formal study towards a doctoral higher degree (PhD, DPhil, DMus, etc).

The amounts offered range upwards from £1000 with the average award being around £3000. The number of awards made each year depends on the funds available and on the quality of the applications but around five or six awards are usually given. The final selection is made in June of each year and awards are given out in September.

Carnegie / Caledonian Postgraduate Scholarships

Graduates of a Scottish university holding a degree with first class honours in any subject and intending to pursue three years of postgraduate research for a PhD degree can be considered for the award of a Carnegie Scholarship. The deadline for receipt of applications is 15 March 2011.

Carnegie Cameron Post-Graduate (Taught) Bursaries

One bursary worth £3,400 will be awarded by the University of St Andrews in the academic year 2011-2012. 

Applicants must be Scottish by birth, descent (at least one parent born in Scotland) or have been continuously resident in Scotland for a period of at least three years for the purpose of secondary or tertiary education in Scotland.

Please check the funding webpage for your Academic School or contact the relevant Postgraduate Secretary to retrieve an application form, and to find out the internal deadline for your School.

Charles and Barbara Tyre Trust

This Trust offers financial help for further training and re-training to young people under the age of 25 who are normally resident in Argyll (e.g. Kinlochleven, Ballachulish, Acharacle, etc). Grants awarded can be for fees, maintenance, travel, books, equipment, etc.

Applications should be received by 31 May each year.  The Board of Governors meets in July to assess applications which come within the rules of the Trust.

Applicants must have a home address in the former County of Argyll and be on a postgraduate or diploma course or be training in a trade or profession other than that in which they are at present trained or be undertaking a course with the Open University or be undertaking training in leadership and initiative.

Colt Foundation Fellowships in Occupational Health

The Colt Foundation awards Fellowships each year to persons who are qualified in science or medicine, and who are carrying out research within the area of occupational and environmental health. The research is expected to lead to a PhD degree.

The Danuta Richardson Medical Scholarship

As the result of a bequest, The University of St Andrews is delighted to announce a 3 year PhD studentship for a graduate of the Medical University of Warsaw to conduct research within the School of Medicine. The candidate must have been resident in Poland as of 1st March 2008 to be eligible for the award.

The award will cover tuition fees at the Home rate and stipend of £12,000 per year for 3 years.

The successful candidate will join a rapidly expanding Medical School, with current active research areas including Biophotonics, Immunology, Virology, Cancer Biology, Neuroscience, Molecular Genetics and Health Psychology.

IASBB Arthurian Postgraduate Awards

The Eugene Vinaver Trust, in association with the British Branch of the International Arthurian Society, offers a number of annual awards for postgraduate research in any field of Arthurian Studies.  The awards are open to graduates of any university in the British Isles, including those of the Republic of Ireland.

The awards are intended as a contribution to postgraduate fees.  Preference will be given in the making of awards to support for full research degrees.

Leverhulme Trade Charities Trust

The Leverhulme Trade Charities Postgraduate Bursaries are designed to provide support for eligible UK students i.e. those who are (or who are connected with) Commercial Travellers, Grocers or Chemists, in financial need undertaking full-time Postgraduate degree courses at institutions in the United Kingdom, leading to recognised qualifications (e.g. PhD/MSc).

Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851 Science Research Fellowships

About eight Industrial Fellowships are available each year, including an ERA Foundation Fellowship for the electro-technology sector. They are awarded to selected, exceptional graduates with the potential to make an outstanding contribution to Industry for a programme of research, supported either by their employing company or in the case of EngD candidates, nominated through a sponsoring company by a UK University EngD Centre.

The Scottish Motor Neurone Disease Association PhD Scholarships

Schools Competition Act Settlement Trust

For the academic year 2011-2012 the School Competition Act Settlement Trust (SCAST) will offer three research awards for £16,500 per annum (up to three years) and 65 one year awards of £2,500 for postgraduate or second degree study.  The trust was established in November 2006 following the settlement of a Competition Act inquiry by the Office of Fair Trading in exchange of fee information by 50 independent schools.  Only former pupils from contributing schools are eligible.  There is no restriction on subject areas.

Wingate Scholarships

Wingate scholarships are awarded to individuals of great potential or proven excellence who need financial support to undertake creative or original work of intellectual, scientific, artistic, social or environmental value. The scholarships are designed to help with the costs of a specific project, which may last up to 3 years, with a maximum amount in any one year of £10,000. 

Applicants should be citizens of the United Kindgom, another EU/Council of Europe country (if resident in the UK for at least 3 years), Ireland, Israel or a Commonwealth or former Commonwealth country.
