EPSRC Studentship Funding

EPSRC LogoThe Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) are the main UK government agency for funding research and training in engineering and the physical sciences, investing around £500 million a year in a broad range of subjects – from mathematics to materials science, and from information technology to structural engineering.

EPSRC operate to meet the needs of industry and society by working in partnership with universities to invest in people and scientific discovery and innovation. The knowledge and expertise gained maintains a technological leading edge, builds a strong economy and improves people's quality of life.

EPSRC's work is complementary to other research investors including other research councils, government agencies, industry and the European Union. EPSRC actively engage in and encourage partnerships and collaborations across disciplines, boundaries and the world.

EPSRC also actively promote public engagement in science, engineering and technology.

DTG - EPSRC provide St Andrews with funding for around 25 studentships via an annual Doctoral Training Award in the following departments: Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science and Psychology.  A maximum of 10% of our intake each year can be awarded to high caliber International students and a minimum of 10% of our intake should be linked to Industrial (CASE) partners.

ICA - EPSRC provided funding for doctorate studentship places linked with industry called Industrial Case Awards (ICA’s, previously CTA's) in the schools of Chemistry, Computer Science and Mathematics, again students cannot apply directly for these but must enquire at school level. Not all schools receive Case awards every year, we have on average 2 places available each year.

DHPA - Partial funding (25k) via a Dorothy Hodgkin Postgraduate Award’s (DHPA) - This scheme is no longer available.

DTC - EPSRC awarded funding for a Doctoral Training Centre in the school of Physics in 2009, up to 10 fully funded places are available each year, please apply via the Physics Doctoral Training Centre.  The Physics Doctoral Training Centre offers additional training, a 10% enhancement on the standard stipend with up to 4 years funding and an excellent cohort of peers from three of the top Scottish Universities.

MASTERS - EPSRC have recently awarded additional funding to support Masters Training in “Statistics & Operational Research” commencing September 2011 and 2012 on the MSc in Statistics Course in the school of Mathematics & Statistics.

How to apply:

Applications are made to the Director of Postgraduate Studies for the relevant department.  Departments will normally set an internal deadline in the spring to allow time for processing and checking applications, however students can start at any point in the following year provided this has been pre-agreed with their supervisor.

All funding and reporting is maintained by the Finance Advice & Support office so students will be required to provide project details (Title & Description) for the EPSRC annual submission in the first year of funding via the student research data portal (SRDP).

Doctoral Prize

EPSRC also provide the opportunity to extend your research training following the submission of your thesis. A Fellowship prize is now available annually providing a salaried position in the University with academic support and a small allowance for consumable and travel.  This is open to all EPSRC funded students to apply in their 3rd or 4th year, please contact the school Director of Postgraduate studies in the first instance if you are interested in applying.
