The following scholarships are offered by external bodies, and may be available to eligible students who wish to attend the University.

Africa Educational Trust

The Africa Educational Trust (AET) has been assisting African students in the UK since 1958. In the 50 years since its establishment, AET has helped over 750,000 disadvantaged children and young people from Africa to access education and training.

Aga Khan Foundation

The Aga Khan Foundation provides a limited number of scholarships each year for postgraduate studies to outstanding students from developing countries who have no other means of financing their studies.

Scholarships are awarded on a 50% grant: 50% loan basis through a competitive application process once a year in June.

The Foundation gives priority to requests for Master's level courses but is also willing to consider applications for PhD programmes, when doctoral degrees are necessary for the career objectives of the student.

Beit Trust

The Beit Trust offers annually a score of Postgraduate Scholarships abroad for studies or research to graduates who are domiciled in Malawi, Zambia or Zimbabwe.

Bolashak Scholarships

Government-funded scholarship programme for high-performing students from Kazakhstan to study overseas. The scheme is available for postgraduate study in a range of disciplines at approved UK universities.

British Federation of Women Graduates

Each year BFWG offers awards to women registered for study at British universities and entering their third year (or part time equivalent) of doctoral (DPhil, PhD etc.) studies.

Canadian Federation of University Women Fellowships and Awards

Each year, CFUW provides a range of post-graduate awards and fellowships to women through its Charitable Trust Fund. The CFUW Fellowships and Awards Program is an affirmative action program as provided for in the Constitution of Canada and eligibility is restricted to women.

Charles Wallace Trust

The Charles Wallace Trusts provide grants for postgraduate students from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Burma/Myanmar.

Clan Donald Scholarship of University Study in Scotland

$7,500 awarded to US citizens for graduate study at a Scottish university.

Colt Foundation Fellowships in Occupational/Environmental Health

The Colt Foundation awards Fellowships each year to persons who are qualified in science or medicine, and who are carrying out research within the area of occupational and environmental health. The research is expected to lead to a PhD degree.

Crockett Scholarship for University Study in Scotland

The James E. Crockett Educational and Charitable Trust has been established in order to promote the happy relationship now existing between Scotland and the United States. The Trust will offer a scholarship of $5,000.00 for graduate study during the next academic year at one of the following Scottish universities: University of Aberdeen, St. Andrews University, University of Edinburgh or University of Glasgow.

Applications should be mailed to the Secretary of the Trust, James A. Crockett, 1317 North Palmway, Lake Worth, Florida 33460 so as to be received on or before February 1 of the year in which the academic year begins.

Fulbright Commission

The US-UK Fulbright Commission provides scholarships to qualified US citizens who wish to study at an educational institution in the UK. The Commission looks for evidence of academic excellence, leadership, outstanding references and strong reasons for coming to the UK.

Global Supplementary Grant Program

Through the Global Supplementary Grant Program (GSGP), the Open Society Foundations offer supplementary grants to students from select countries of Eastern and Central Europe, the former Soviet Union and Mongolia, the Middle East/Near East, and South Asia.

The purpose of the program is to enable qualified students to pursue doctoral studies in the Humanities and Social Sciences at accredited universities throughout Asia, Australia, Europe, the Middle/Near East, and North America.

Japan-Scotland Society Scholarship

Two Scholarships worth 300,000 JPY are available each year to assist Japanese students of any speciality undertaking Masters postgraduate study at a Scottish university. 

The award was established in 2009 by the Japan Scotland Society to commemorate the founder, Mr Takahashi Yoshiteru, and the long-time donor and supporter of the society, Mr James T Howat.

Eligible applicants must be Japanese nationals and willing to be active in the JSS after completion of their studies.  Scholarship and application details can be found the JSS website.

Applications should be sent to JSS with the required documents, and must be received by the 30 April each year.

Marshall Scholarships

Marshall Scholarships finance young Americans of high ability to study for a degree in the UK. The awards are funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and overseen by the Marshall Aid Commemoration Commission.

R. Harper Brown Memorial Scholarship

The Illinois Saint Andrew Society is pleased to sponsor this scholarship program which honors the legacy of R. Harper Brown, Illinois Saint Andrew Society Governor, Clansman of the year and co-Chair of the Kith and Kin campaign. The purpose of this Scholarship Fund is to assist in defraying the cost of an American student's study at a university in Scotland.

Preference will be given to applicants who reside within 100 miles of the greater Chicago area. For more information please visit the Chiago Scots website.

Royal and Ancient Golf Club Scholarships

The University receives a grant annually from the Royal & Ancient Golf Club to fund a golf development programme for talented golfers. The programme is administered through the Department of Sport and Exercise. Foundation Bursaries are also available.

Saint Andrews Society of Washington DC

The Saint Andrew’s Society of Washington, DC, annually grants awards from its Washington Scots Charity & Education Fund Scholarships Program.

Awards are made to scholars enrolled in US or Scottish institutions for the third or fourth year of College or University or full-time graduate study. The size and total number of awards varies from year to year. Please see the Society website for further information and full eligibility criteria.

St Andrews Society of the State of New York

The St Andrews Society of the State of New York provides funding for two Scottish graduate students to study in the US and two Scottish-American students to study in Scotland. Each scholarship currently provides funds of $20,000 to $30,000 to be used initially against tuition, then board, transportation and other expenses.

The Scottish Motor Neurone Disease Association PhD Scholarships

This scheme aims to stimulate and increase high quality research into MND and hopes to encourage the scientists of the future to develop careers in MND related research. SUPA Prize Studentships

The Scottish Universities Physics Alliance (SUPA) Prize Studentships are prestigious and competitive awards intended to attract outstanding physics students from around the world, irrespective of nationality, to study for a PhD in Scotland. SUPA, supported by the Scottish Funding Council, is focused on seven research themes: Astronomy & Space Physics, Condensed Matter & Materials Physics, Energy, Nuclear & Plasma Physics, Particle Physics, Photonics, Physics & Life Sciences.

TOEFL Merit Scholarship Program

The scholarship program is designed to award TOEFL test takers for achieving academic excellence, exhibiting leadership skills, performing extracurricular activities and demonstrating English-communication proficiency.

UK 9/11 Scholarships Fund

The UK 9/11 Scholarships Fund seeks to award scholarships to children or dependants of victims of the September 11 attacks on the USA, or other subsequent terrorist tragedy, for study at higher or further education institutions in the UK.
