Carnegie / Caledonian Postgraduate Scholarships

Graduates of a Scottish university holding or expecting to achieve a degree with first-class honours in any subject and intending to pursue three years of postgraduate research leading to a PhD can be nominated by their university for the award of a Carnegie Scholarship.  Nominations must be made by a senior member of academic staff from a Scottish university by 15th March each year.

Non-UK domiciled students are eligible to apply but the scholarship will only cover the cost of fees at the rate applied to UK/EU domiciled students.  Further details are available on the Carnegie Trust website.

Additional Criteria:

Only students who have undertaken or are undertaking their first degree at a Scottish university are eligible.

Students who have not undertaken their first degree at a Scottish university but are undertaking a one year postgraduate degree at a Scottish university are not eligible to apply for a Scholarship.

What does it cover?

Duration:

Maximum of 3 years. In exceptional cases, the scholarship may be awarded for 4 years when a good case is made at the time of applying.

Value (per annum):

Tuition fees (Home fee rate) and stipend of £15,200 per annum, plus up to £600 research-related expenses per annum.  If awarded to a St Andrews student liable for the International tuition fee rate, a St Andrews scholarship will cover the balance.

How do I apply?

There is no application form for candidates.  Academic staff must nominate chosen candidates for the scholarship by 15 March each year, using the nomination form provided on the Carnegie Trust website.
