ESRC Studentship Funding

The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) is the UK's largest funding agency for research and postgraduate training relating to social and economic issues. It supports independent, high quality research relevant to business, the public sector and voluntary organisations. At any one time the ESRC supports over 4,000 researchers and postgraduate students in academic institutions and research policy institutes.

The ESRC awards for UK students cover university and college fees as well as a maintenance element to contribute towards living costs. EU students are eligible for a fees only awards.

The ESRC recognised departments eligible for ESRC studentships in the University of St Andrews are Economics, Geography, Social Anthropology, Management, Psychology and International Relations.

The studentships offered are 1+3 or +3  Studentships to the Scottish Doctoral Training Centre.

1+3 studentships are four year awards comprising of one year Masters and 3 year Doctorate (applied for together) +3 studentships are three year awards for students intending to study their Doctorate only and hold an ESRC accepted masters degree or suitable experience.

NEW Scottish Doctoral Training Centre

The ESRC have awarded 65 Studentships each year for five years from October 2011 to the Scottish Doctoral Training Centre. The University of St Andrews is a member Institution of the ESRC Scottish Doctoral Training Centre.  It welcomes applications for ESRC 1+3 an +3 doctoral Studentships in the schools of Economics, Social Anthropology, Geography, Management, Psychology and International Relations. Each of the afore mentioned schools are part of study pathways held within the Scottish Doctoral Training Centre and are linked with other Scottish Institutions to strengthen the collective experience.

Applications for studentships should be made to the relevant Director of Post Graduate Studies, a 2-3 page proposal with a CV and supporting statement from your prospective supervisor should be submitted by 4p.m. 3 May 2011.  Awards will be made based on Academic Merit shortly after the 3rd May.
