The University promotes and in some cases co-funds a large number of awards schemes for Overseas research and masters students. This page gives information about scholarships available to students who are classified as Overseas for fee purposes. Aga Khan Foundation
The Aga Khan Foundation provides a limited number of scholarships each year for postgraduate studies to outstanding students from developing countries who have no other means of financing their studies. Scholarships are awarded on a 50% grant: 50% loan basis through a competitive application process once a year in June. The Foundation gives priority to requests for Master's level courses but is also willing to consider applications for PhD programmes, when doctoral degrees are necessary for the career objectives of the student.

Beit Trust
Postgraduate fellowships are available to support postgraduate study or research in the UK. Applicants must be under 30 years of age (35 in the case of medical doctors) and university graduates domiciled in Zambia (4 fellowships), Zimbabwe (4) or Malawi (2).

British Chevening Scholarships
These scholarships, funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and administered by the British Council, are prestigious awards which enable over 2300 international students to study in the UK every year, usually for Masters degrees.
Scholarships are offered in over 150 countries and enable talented graduates and young professionals to become familiar with the UK and gain skills which will benefit their countries.
You must apply to the British Embassy/ High Commission or The British Council in the country of which you you are a citizen. As the programme is so diverse, there isn't a single timetable for applications, so please refer to the British Chevening Scholarship Website for further details.
British Federation of Women Graduates
The British Federation of Women Graduates has limited funds to make awards to women graduates undertaking postgraduate research in Great Britain (ie, all of the United Kingdom except Northern Ireland). These awards are made without reference to financial need.

British Marshall Scholarships
Marshall Scholarships finance young Americans of high ability to study for a degree in the UK. Each scholarship is held for two years and is available in any subject discipline. Up to 40 scholarships are awarded annually. The scholarships cover university fees, cost of living expenses, annual book grant, research and daily travel, air fares and, where applicable, a contribution towards the support of a dependent spouse.
The deadline for the British Marshall Scholarships is the first week of October in the year prior to the start of your course. For more details regarding the scholarship programme and application process, please refer to the Marshall Scholarship Website.
Canadian Federation of University Women Fellowships and Awards
CFUW Fellowships and Awards of up to $11,500 are available for funding academic year 2011-2012.
All applicants must:
- Hold at least a bachelors degree or equivalent from a recognised university;
- Have been accepted into, or be currently enrolled in, her proposed program and place of study for academic year 2011-2012; and
- Be a Canadian citizen or have landed immigrant status or permanent residence in Canada.

Canon Collins Educational Trust for Southern Africa
CCETSA provides scholarships to students from or in the countries of southern Africa who wish to pursue a postgraduate degree (normally a one year Masters degree) in the UK. Carnegie / Caledonian Postgraduate Scholarships
Graduates of a Scottish university holding a degree with first class honours in any subject and intending to pursue three years of postgraduate research for a PhD degree can be considered for the award of a Carnegie Scholarship. Carnegie Cameron Postgraduate (Taught) Bursaries
One bursary worth £3,400 will be awarded by the University of St Andrews in the academic year 2011-2012.
Applicants must be Scottish by birth, descent (at least one parent born in Scotland) or have been continuously resident in Scotland for a period of at least three years for the purpose of secondary or tertiary education in Scotland.

Chevening Scholarships for Australian Postgraduate Students
The Chevening programme has, over 26 years, provided more than 30,000 scholarships at higher education institutions in the UK for postgraduate students or researchers from countries across the world. The programme offers outstanding graduates and young professionals the opportunity to study at UK universities.
Awards are made for one year's formal study for a postgraduate qualification or for a shorter period of not less than three months to pursue private study or research at a university or similar institution in the UK. We are looking for individuals who can demonstrate that they have the potential and ambition to make a substantial, positive difference in their chosen fields. Evidence of leadership experience and potential is critical.
In 2011 we are particularly interested in applicants with a strong climate change and energy background.

Charles Wallace Trust
These trusts provide grants for postgraduate students from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Burma/Myanmar.

Clan Campbell Educational Foundation Scholarship
Two newly established scholarships in memory of Hugh Moore and Jim Campbell will be given to qualified applicants annually in the amount of $1,000.
Applicants must be presently enrolled in a college or university, or have a letter of acceptance to a college or university in a program of at least two years' duration.

Commonwealth Scholarship: Developing Countries
The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission offers opportunities to citizens of Developing Commonwealth countries to study in the UK, as part of the UK's contribution to the international Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan. Awards are available for both taught Masters and Research courses.

Commonwealth Scholarships: Developed Countries
Commonwealth Scholarships for students from the developed Commonwealth to study at the University of St Andrews are now available.
These Scholarships apply to candidates from Australia, The Bahamas, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Cyprus, Malta, New Zealand, and Singapore. There is a nominating agency for Commonwealth Scholarships in each Commonwealth country.
All applications should be made through a candidate's local Agency in their home country. For more details, please see the CSC website.
Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Scheme (CSSS)
The Shared Scholarship Scheme is a joint initiative between the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (with funding from DFID), and UK universities, to support scholarships for students from developing Commonwealth countries who would not otherwise be able to study in the United Kingdom.

Crockett Scholarship for University Study in Scotland
The James E. Crockett Educational and Charitable Trust has been established in order to promote the happy relationship now existing between Scotland and the United States. The Trust will offer a scholarship of $5,000.00 for graduate study during the next academic year at one of the following Scottish universities: University of Aberdeen, St. Andrews University, University of Edinburgh or University of Glasgow.
Applications should be mailed to the Secretary of the Trust, James A. Crockett, 1317 North Palmway, Lake Worth, Florida 33460 so as to be received on or before February 1 of the year in which the academic year begins.
Dorothy Hodgkin Postgraduate Awards
Dorothy Hodgkin Postgraduate Awards (DHPA) is a UK scheme to bring outstanding students from India, China, Hong Kong, South Africa, Brazil, Russia and the developing world to come and study for PhDs in top rated UK research facilities.

FIDERH Scholarships for Mexican Students
FIDERH (Fund for Development of Human Resources) has collaborated with the University of St Andrews to offer discounts of up to 20% of the tuition fee to selected applicants who will be studying for a postgraduate degree at the University.

FUNED Scholarships for Mexican Students
FUNED is a nonprofit organization that provides financial aid to Mexican students admitted into full time Masters programs in Engineering, Economics, Finance, Law, or Business. The awards offered cover up to 40% of the total costs of the programme, including tuition, books, housing, and living expenses.
The organization has a scholarship agreement with The University of St Andrews to offer two mexican students a discount rate of 20% off the total tuition.
The most important requirement within the program is for the student to have a letter of acceptance from the University.
They should also supply the name and contact details of a guarantor (a person, such as a family member, who owns a house or property and would be able to support the candidate should they be unable to cover the remaining costs of study) who is under 60 years of age. The guarantor should also support the application with a letter from the Credit Board confirming that they have no credits or are paying any existing credits on time.

Global Supplementary Grant Program
The Open Society Scholarship Programs is pleased to announce the Global Supplementary Grant Program (GSGP) for the 2011 – 2012 academic year. GSGP offers supplementary grants to students from select countries of Eastern and Central Europe, the former Soviet Union and Mongolia, the Middle East/Near East, and South Asia.
The purpose of the program is to enable qualified students to pursue doctoral studies in the Humanities and Social Sciences at accredited universities throughout Asia, Australia, Europe, the Middle/Near East, and North America.
Further details regarding the program and guidelines for applying may be found in the application forms for GSGP 2011-2012. The deadline for students pursuing a Ph.D. in Europe is May 31, 2011.
Japan-Scotland Society Scholarship
Two Scholarships worth 300,000 JPY are available each year to assist Japanese students of any speciality undertaking PhD or Masters postgraduate study at a Scottish university.
The award was established in 2009 by the Japan Scotland Society to commemorate the founder, Mr Takahashi Yoshiteru, and the long-time donor and supporter of the society, Mr James T Howat.
Eligible applicants must be Japanese nationals and willing to be active in the JSS after completion of their studies. Scholarship and application details can be found the JSS website: http://www.japan-scotland.jp/
Applications should be sent to JSS with the required documents, and must be received by the 31st May each year.
Karim Rida Said Foundation
The KRSF is able to provide full or partial scholarships for Masters degrees at the University of St Andrews and other participating universitites, depending on the level of financial need. All the Foundation asks of its scholars is that they return to their own country or another country of the Arab League immediately upon completion of their studies and remain there for at least three years.
To apply for a Karim Rida Said Scholarship you need to:
- have a good first degree;
- provide evidence of your proficiency in English;
- be under forty years of age;
- be Iraqi, Jordanian, Lebanese, Palestinian or Syrian, normally resident in the Arab world and not hold any form of British residency;
- demonstrate that your chosen course of study will be of use to your home country or the Middle East region;
- have at least two years' work experience;
- apply for a place on a course in Britain;
- sign a binding undertaking to return to your home country or a country of the Arab League for a set period.

Open Society Foundations / University of St Andrews Scholarships
Scholarships are available for study for the MLitt International Strategy & Economics, the MLitt Middle East and Central Asian Security Studies and the MLitt Peace and Conflict Studies.
Each scholarship provides tuition fees at the University of St. Andrews, a stipend to cover living costs (for one person only), a thesis and study travel allowance and return air travel from the scholar's home country. The scholarships are open to applicants from Indonesia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

R. Harper Brown Memorial Scholarship
The Illinois Saint Andrew Society is pleased to sponsor this scholarship program which honors the legacy of R. Harper Brown, Illinois Saint Andrew Society Governor, Clansman of the year and co-Chair of the Kith and Kin campaign. The purpose of this Scholarship Fund is to assist in defraying the cost of an American student's study at a university in Scotland.
Eligibility: At least a graduating senior in high school with an acceptance and intention to attend university in Scotland or a student at an accredited American college or university looking for a study abroad experience.
Selection Criteria:
- Scholastic achievement
- Potential for future activities that would make a contribution to the Illinois Saint Andrew Society and the greater Scottish community
- Preference will be given to applicants who reside within 100 miles of the greater Chicago area
- Preference will be given to ISAS members their children and grandchildren

Ransome Trust Scholarship
For students from North America who will be studying at St Andrews for a one year Masters degree. There are three postgraduate scholarships covering full tuition fees for each year of study, full accommodation fees in University accommodation (or comparable fees towards private costs), a fixed travel allowance and a book allowance. The deadline for applications is 28 February each year.

Scotland's Saltire Scholarships
This exciting scholarship opportunity is open to Canadian, Chinese, Indian and US nationals and is aimed at encouraging bright, talented and hard working individuals to live, work and study in Scotland.
Awards worth £2000 each are available towards the cost of tuition fees for full time Masters Programmes in a wide range of subject areas. Eligible courses at St Andrews are as follows:
- All MSc programmes
- All MLitt programmes
- All MRes programmes
- MPhil Behavioural and Neural Sciences
Please note that all other postgraduate programmes, including the Graduate Diploma, are not eligible courses for this scholarship.

Scottish Overseas Research Students Awards Scheme (SORSAS)
SORS awards provide funding to help outstanding full time postgraduate research students from outside the UK and European Union. Each award covers the difference between the Overseas rate of tuition fee and the Home (UK/EU) rate of tuition fee charged by the University for 3 years of study. SORS awards do not cover the Home/EU fee element, maintenance or travel expenses.
The awards may be held in any field of study. The only criteria for these awards are academic excellence and research potential.
To be eligible for a SORS award:
- You must be liable for overseas tuition fees;
- You must be able to demonstrate outstanding merit and research potential. Applicants must either possess a first class honours degree or international equivalent (normally defined as being within the top 10% of your graduating cohort) or hold a Master's degree with distinction;
- You must not have held a SORS or ORS award before;
- The School in which you wish to study must have made you an offer of a full time PhD place at the University of St Andrews to commence in the 2011/12 Academic Year, i.e. between August 2011 and June 2012 (inclusive) OR You will be a current student who will be entering the second year of full time PhD study at the University of St Andrews between the aforementioned dates.
Please note that SORSAS funding is no longer available for MPhil courses.
Candidates who are successful in obtaining a SORS award may be eligible to receive an additional scholarship from the University of St Andrews to cover the Home (UK) rate of tuition fees and a contribution towards living costs. To be considered for the Home fee waiver and maintenance stipend, you will be required to supply an additional statement on the application form providing details of your financial situation and your need for this extra funding.

St Andrews Society of the State of New York
Open to students of Scottish or American descent who have graduated from an American university and have a New York address. Students will be required to study at any university in Scotland for one year.

UK 9/11 Scholarships Fund
The United Kingdom 9/11 Scholarships Fund provides awards for study in higher or further education in the United Kingdom to children or dependants of victims of the terrorist attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001.
Scholarships are offered for:
- Undergraduate courses lasting up to four years and leading to a degree at a recognised higher education institution in the UK;
- Masters courses at recognised higher education institutions in the UK;
- Courses leading to a recognised qualification at a further education institution in the UK;
- Accredited study periods of up to one year's length at recognised British higher education institutions for students whose college or university has an exchange agreement with a partner institution in the UK.

US-UK Fulbright Commission
The US-UK Fulbright Commission provides scholarships to qualified US citizens who wish to study at at an educational institution in the UK. Up to 9 awards are available each year for the first year of masters or PhD study. The Commission looks for evidence of academic excellence, leadership, outstanding references and strong reasons for coming to the UK.
Candidates will be selected by the US-UK Fulbright Commission and the Institute of International Education (IIE) to receive grants to be used towards tuition fees and maintenance costs in their first year of postgraduate study in the UK.
Minimum eligibility for this award category:
- US citizen (resident anywhere but the UK)
- Rigor in scholarly enquiry and academic or professional excellence
- Strong reasons for wishing to pursue the proposed project in the UK
- Interest in the peoples and cultures of the UK
- Clear set of objectives for the Fulbright year
- Commitment to the host community through volunteer and extra-curricular activity
The deadline for receipt of 2012/13 applications is 17 October 2011.
Awards are also available for academics and professionals who wish to lecture, study and/or conduct research in the UK.

Wingate Scholarships
Wingate scholarships are awarded to individuals of great potential or proven excellence who need financial support to undertake creative or original work of intellectual, scientific, artistic, social or environmental value. The scholarships are designed to help with the costs of a specific project, which may last up to 3 years, with a maximum amount in any one year of £10,000.
Applicants should be citizens of the United Kindgom, another EU/Council of Europe country (if resident in the UK for at least 3 years), Ireland, Israel or a Commonwealth or former Commonwealth country.
