Research and Enterprise Services

Research and Enterprise Services (RES) is the administrative unit at the University of St Andrews which deals with pre-award administration (sponsor identification, university research and consultancy contract provision, negotiation and signature) and the post-award handling of project-derived intellectual property and other outputs.

The role of the RES is to assist research staff and postgraduate students by providing:

  • Direction to sources of funding and investment; intelligence and guidance on the priorities of external funding agencies; access to European Funding through identification of new opportunities and potential partners including Framework RTD and ERDF.
  • Research support and development of new University business through marketing of the Unversity's expertise and resources; developing and cultivating links to research sponsors, industry and Government
  • Business development through cultivating links to research sponsors, industry and Government.
  • Effective research contract negotiation on behalf of the University.
  • Intellectual property management, licensing and technology and knowledge transfer.
  • Assistance with business planning and spin-out company formation.

In addition, and specific to the University student body, RES provides access to the Scottish Institute for Enterprise (SIE) whose role is to raise the level of entrepreneurial skills and awareness amongst the student population, specifically awareness of intellectual property matters, knowledge and technology commercialisation and spin-out business issues.

Intellectual Property Rights (IPR)

Postgraduate students should note that by signing the University's matriculation form they will be agreeing to abide by University rules governing confidentiality and Intellectual Property Rights (IPR). University policy requires that postgraduate students assign intellectual property rights in their research work in St Andrews to the University in return for a share in any revenue that the University may acquire from commercial use of the IPR. Clearly, in a successful research project the RES office may be involved in auditing, assessing and commercialising the generated intellectual property.
